Essential Oils seem to be everywhere lately, and the choices can be overwhelming. If you are new to the idea of essential oils, you will be wondering which oils to use for which purposes, which brand to go with, and how to use them. Even if you've been using essential oils for years, but haven't experienced doTERRA oils, there is a learning curve as you discover that the purest, highest grade of therapeutic oils can be used as natural medicine. It's a game changer. On this page you will learn what sets doTERRA apart from other brands, how to use essential oils, and how to bring these amazing oils into your home at the lowest price. First, let's start with the basics.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They protect the plant from predators and decay, functioning as the immune system of the plant. Used aromatically, the powerful fragrances can lift one's mood, calm the senses, and elicit powerful emotional responses. However, essential oils are not simply for aromatherapy. They can be natural solutions to support our health and well-being in so many ways. When we use essential oils, our bodies recognize them as a natural substance. They have a way of "nudging" our bodies to naturally return to a state of health when we match the right oil to the right ailment. Compared to pharmaceutical medicines with side effects, all you get with essential oils are side benefits. Most oils have multiple effects that work on different systems in our bodies simultaneously. You can search "essential oils" on PubMed for thousands of studies or look at doTERRA's own Science blog to find out more about how essential oils work. What's important to be aware of however, is that there is currently no governing body overseeing the quality of essential oils. That means it's "buyer beware" and you have to do your own research to find out which brand to trust. Let's discover what sets doTERRA apart.
The doTERRA Difference
You might be thinking, "Aren't all essential oil brands pretty much the same?" The short answer: NO! A bottle in a health food store (for example) labelled "100% pure" could contain a small percentage of essential oil and the rest may be fillers and possibly even synthetic materials. Or, the plant used to obtain the oil may not have been grown under the right conditions, harvested and distilled correctly, or tested using high standards for quality.
Responsible Sourcing: doTERRA sources their oils from all around the world, finding the location where each plant grows optimally, in its native environment, for the highest therapeutic value. doTERRA ensures that only the best seeds, soil, equipment and growing conditions are used in the production process. The right soil and nutrients, climate, timing and growing methods make all the difference in the quality of the plant, and consequently the oil. DoTERRA partners with highly skilled local farmers and harvesters, who understand the native plants and maintain the highest standards every step of the way to produce pure, potent and safe essential oils. This method not only ensures the highest quality essential oils, but it provides jobs and improves local economies. Through doTERRA's Co-Impact Sourcing model, entire communities are being supported. Responsible sourcing also ensures that plants are not over-harvested, and are sustainable. Together with doTERRA's Healing Hands Foundation, which provides housing, hospitals, water supply systems, or whatever a community is in need of, doTERRA is fulfilling its goal to improve the lives of families, communities, and the world--one drop at a time. It's a beautiful thing! I am honoured to align myself with a company of such integrity and high ethical standards. After growing and harvesting, the oils are obtained from the plants via steam distillation or expression (for citrus oils). Getting all of these steps just right is critical in obtaining high quality oils.
Scientific Testing & Transparency: doTERRA sets the highest standard for quality in the industry. They created the CPTG - Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade testing process. Rigorous testing and protocols ensure that doTERRA oils do not contain added fillers or harmful contaminants and the highest levels of therapeutic constituents are maintained. DoTERRA has state of the art scientific labs to perform numerous tests such as Gas Chromotography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). They also submit their oils for Third Party Testing and provide complete test results for every batch of oil. Each bottle has a code on the bottom. This code can be entered on the website sourcetoyou.com. Enter the number and a complete set of test results will appear. (It's also a beautiful website and a great resource for learning more about doTERRA). This transparency sets doTERRA apart and goes a long way to reassuring people who use these oils that they are getting the best product, each and every time. It also means that doTERRA oils can be trusted for use in medical research and partnerships with healthcare facilities. This is the future of healthcare!
The 3 Ways to Use Essential Oils
Using the oils aromatically is a great way to uplift mood, create a sense of calmness, improve respiratory function, and cleanse the air to make your home smell amazing (without harmful chemicals!). You can put a drop of oil on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and cup them over your nose. Inhale deeply and the benefits will impact you immediately. Another great way is to use a diffuser. That way, everyone in the room gets the benefits. It's very empowering to be able to impact the health and mood of the household! Try Peppermint and Wild Orange for uplifting energy, On Guard to promote immunity, or Lavender and Frankincense for deep relaxation. The possibilities are endless. (Contact me for a list of my favourite diffuser blends)
Another way to get the benefits of essential oils is to apply them to your skin. In most cases you will want to use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. Using a carrier oil extends the life of your oils, helps the oils pass through your skin efficiently and deeply, and reduces skin sensitivity. Some oils can be applied neat (no dilution). Try lavender for a bug bite, bee sting or burn. Instant relief. Topical use is very effective for pain. Use Deep Blue on sore muscles or before or after a strenuous workout. Applying essential oils with a carrier oil to the bottoms of one's feet is very effective (and a great method to use on children). Lavender to help you sleep, On Guard to boost immunity, or Breathe (Easy Air in Canada) for better respiration, are just a few examples. You can add Frankincense to your favourite facial oil to reduce the appearance of lines and skin imperfections, or try Melaleuca (Tea Tree) for blemishes or minor cuts.
Internal use is not the way most people start with essential oils, and certainly not recommended for most other brands, but with doTERRA, if an oil is labelled as safe for internal use, you can feel safe in doing so, provided you follow sensible guidelines. For instance, hotter oils such as Oregano should be put in an empty capsule and not consumed straight up. Try adding 1 - 2 drops in your water (try lemon, peppermint, or Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend); or a cup of tea (On Guard to boost immunity, Digest Zen for digestive support), or try them in recipes. I love adding a drop of lemon to homemade salad dressing or in marinades. Peppermint brownies anyone? . . . Now if you really want to support your health in a proactive way, you could take Frankincense and/or Copaiba internally either sublingually (under the tongue) or in a capsule. We can discuss those protocols if you connect with me or become a Wholesale Customer.
Essential Oil Safety
When using an essential oil for the first time, it's a good idea to dilute it with a carrier oil to see how it reacts with your skin. Use one drop of essential oil in 5 drops of carrier oil.
Some oils are powerful and "hot" and should always be diluted. These include Oregano, Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass and Thyme
1 - 2 drops. doTERRA's oils are potent and 1 - 2 drops are all you need at a time. After 20 minutes or so, if the desired effect is not achieved, you can try another drop. Essential Oils are metabolized quickly by the body.
Don't apply essential oils on or near the inside of the nose, inner ear, the eyes, broken skin, or other sensitive areas.
If you do find that your skin turns red, itches or burns, wipe the area with a cloth and apply a carrier oil. Adding water will make it worse (good to know)
Some essential oils are photosensitive, which means your skin will burn more easily. Avoid sun tanning or tanning beds for 12 hours after applying any citrus oil to your skin.
Children are more sensitive than adults. Internal use is not recommended. Topical use is fine with a carrier oil (more carrier oil than you would for an adult) and the safest place to apply is the bottoms of the feet. For babies under 2 years, start with aromatic use. Heavy dilution (1 drop in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil) for the bottoms of the feet with Lavender or Roman Chamomile is safe (and makes for a very calm baby)
Keep your oils out of direct sunlight, with the caps on tight.
